Will Smith -- Hitler, Schmitler; He Wasn't That Bad

UPDATE: Will Smith's rep sent TMZ the following statement from him, which reads: "It is an awful and disgusting lie. It speaks to the dangerous power of an ignorant person with a pen. I am incensed and infuriated to have to respond to such ludicrous misinterpretation. Adolph Hitler was a vile, heinous, vicious killer responsible for one of the greatest acts of evil committed on this planet."

On the day before Christmas, a leading Jewish group is kvetching loudly about Will Smith's recent suggestion that Adolf Hitler wasn't all bad, calling it "ignorant, detestable, and offensive." Oy.

The Jewish Defense League is calling on Barack Obama to repudiate Smith's comments, and wants theaters to pull Smith's new flick "I Am Legend" from their screens. Smith told a Scottish paper that Hitler "didn't wake up going, 'Let me do the most evil thing I can do today.' ... I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was 'good.'" What kind of meshuggeneh talk is that?!

Smith's words, say the JDL, "spit on the memory of every person murdered by the Nazis. His disgusting words stick a knife in the backs of every veteran who fought (and sometimes died) to save the world from the intentions of Adolf Hitler."

91. When did America become so intolerant?? Nowadays it seems everthing is politicaly incorrect when anything can be taken the wrong way. Read a little people, Hitler was indeed a monster and he commited genocide. But in order to do that he had to have a lot of people follow him. He was first a politician, He was elected. He maniplated people to do things against their nature. That to me is an EVIL genious. I agree with Will, I think in Hitler's mind he had the right idea, HE WAS WRONG, But he was great at manipulating people. Now Jews will want to crucify me for saying this, Im not excusing Hitler and I dont Think Will Smith was doing so either. Its just history.

92. Uh I thought Jewish people didn't complain, well according to Adrianne Curry they don't. HAHAHA!!! I heard that Hitler had syphilis and it damaged his brain.

93. Will, what the F#*K, i know you have a small head and big ears, but seriously....... Spend a day at the Halocaust Museum and then think about what you said and thought and fix it. Don't do it as a P.R. thing, do it because you got informed.

Shame on you, and you should really think before you speak.

94. I don't think he meant any harm, really. He's probably right--Hitler probably believed he was doing what he thought was best for "his" people. he didn't see it as wrong--although we all know it was wrong. Hitler thought what he was doing was the right thing to do, and saw the other cultures that were different as inferior to his own, and attempted to erradicate that population. was it right? HELL NO. But, I don't think Will Smith was trying to offend anyone with his statements, either. This is one of those topics that you should leave well enough alone . . . .

95. Talk about over reaction. He did not say Hitler was groovy just that in his screwed up mind he thought he was doing something right. Political correctness has become synonymous with stupidity.

96.
Here is The statement so yo won't have to take HArvey's word for it!!!

"Even Hitler didn't wake up going, 'let me do the most evil thing I can do today'," said Will. "I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was 'good'. Stuff like that just needs reprogramming.

97. LMAOOOOOOOO @ Gerald Ford's "I Like Turtles" comment!

Will Smith was an idiot for say that. Very similar to Marge Schott's comments. This will be a bump in his career. He's very respected overall!

98. Wow ,Will Smith do you jest ?Could you have thought of anything worse to have said ?This is the equivalent of the pot calling the kettle black ,how sad that you would choose such poorly thought out words to say what you did .To think that the bounty hunter said what he did and what you said is no different ?Oh wait *sighs* ,what you said was'nt a private conversation ,so maybe what you have said could be construed as a worse offense ?I doubt they'll pull "I am Legend" but I for one will not go see it now ...thanks Will Smith for the genius commentary !

99. Wow this is really being blown out of proportion. I actually think he made a rather astute observation. I don't think many evil people are able to see themselves or their deeds as evil. They are warped and twisted and usually use some form of backwards logic as a means of justification for their actions. That's just a fact. People like this are mentally ill and do not share the same world view as most rational, normal humans. He is not justifying or glorifying anything Hitler did, he is only saying in all likelyhood Hitler did not see what he was doing as evil....if he did, he probably would not have gone as far as he did.

100. "Those who do not understand history are doomed to repeat it." How do you stop the next hitler? By understanding the first Hitler. What Smith said was to the point, those that commit heinous crimes do not share that perspective. They have rationalized it, justified it and become defensive about their actions. He was not praising Hitler he was speaking to the pathology of his creation.

PS: I new some wanker would get to comparing Bush to Hitler, I truly hope that those of you make those statements cannot procreate.

PPS: To all the racists.....Will Smith is smarter, more successful and happier that you will ever be because anyone who holds those views spends their time blaming others for their failures. .

101. He is just saying that Hitler is misunderstood.....isn't that what we all believe deep down inside?? OK maybe not but he does have a right to his own opinion and freedom of speech should protect him. If you don't like what he said, then go ahead and boycott his movies, tv show, and any other bad thing he puts out. Hitler may have thought he was doing good but he was a madman therefore anything he said or did should be as acts of evil and insanity.

102. I like(ed) Will Smith, his family and their appearances and "values," before this. I am hoping it was one of those thoughts that he should have contimplated more about before he spoke. I wonder if he is aware that amongst the 6 million Jewish people, more than 1.5 were CHILDREN, and besides the 6 million Jewish, there were blacks, gypsies and anyone else killed that wasn't a blonde haired blue eyes Arian type.
Personally, I choose to give him an opportunity to rectify his thinking, and I did not feel the same way about Mel Gibson, who I truly believe IS an anti-semite.

103. It's not about Hitler being a mad genuis and his ability to influence people. Hate is hate. Look at some of the comments on this board. There are enough hateful people out there just waiting for someone like Hitler with the same ideology and the power to act upon it. If the President woke up one day and decided he wanted to eradicate a certain group simply because he didn't like them, he would have volunteers out of his behind. There are just evil people in the world and to justify their actions as being "mentally ill" is an insult to people who truly are mentally ill. Now if evidence appeared that suggested Hitler wore aluminum foil helmets and thought the Jews were aliens sent down to overcome the earth, THAT would be mentally ill.

104. Well, Will Smith is right that hitler's intentions weren't to be evil, but that doesn't make hitler any less than an evil person. A tirant like that should've been assasinated before he even invaded poland for the hardline anti-semitic sentiments of Mein Kampf. I wonder what the context of the question answer session interview of will smith? I don't believe he meant anything offensive by that comment.

Now the Jewish Defense League has gone TOO far bringing race into this by associating Barack Obama with Smith's words. I think the JDL is engaging in race-baiting and they should stop!

105. Why don't you all stop worrying about what other people do and start worrying about yourselves? Or are you all so perfect that you have the right to bash others?
