Will Smith -- Hitler, Schmitler; He Wasn't That Bad

UPDATE: Will Smith's rep sent TMZ the following statement from him, which reads: "It is an awful and disgusting lie. It speaks to the dangerous power of an ignorant person with a pen. I am incensed and infuriated to have to respond to such ludicrous misinterpretation. Adolph Hitler was a vile, heinous, vicious killer responsible for one of the greatest acts of evil committed on this planet."

On the day before Christmas, a leading Jewish group is kvetching loudly about Will Smith's recent suggestion that Adolf Hitler wasn't all bad, calling it "ignorant, detestable, and offensive." Oy.

The Jewish Defense League is calling on Barack Obama to repudiate Smith's comments, and wants theaters to pull Smith's new flick "I Am Legend" from their screens. Smith told a Scottish paper that Hitler "didn't wake up going, 'Let me do the most evil thing I can do today.' ... I think he woke up in the morning and using a twisted, backwards logic, he set out to do what he thought was 'good.'" What kind of meshuggeneh talk is that?!

Smith's words, say the JDL, "spit on the memory of every person murdered by the Nazis. His disgusting words stick a knife in the backs of every veteran who fought (and sometimes died) to save the world from the intentions of Adolf Hitler."

1. What a lot of anger over nothing. No one is disputing that Hitler was an awful, vile person and the deaths of millions of Jews should never have happened, so stop arguing that point.

What is being said is that everyone (yes, even Hitler or Bush), act on what they think is best for people, a country, an ideology, or even just for themselves - for what they feel are "good" reasons. This is not a measure of the person, or a validation of their actions, but rather a realization that there are some really crazy people out there who reach a level of being in power and become dangerous for society as a whole.

I would bet the bulk of you who are up in arms, are villifying Will Smith because you feel that it is a "good" thing to do.

3. Wow!! where was I when this came out? I love and adore Will Smith and i think he is a rare breed, considering all these other overtop glorified celebs out there. He is a devoted family man, husband and father, has a stunningly gorgeous wife and they only have eyes for each other. He is extremely respected by many. You see and hear all this drama with these celebs, there names always in the news. I cant say enough good things about the Smiths......love em. Its really sad that this reporter would try and drag Will through the mud knowing what he was reporting was inaccurate......Pretty low. I got your back Will....

4. Has anyone stopped to think that Will Smith was just being philosophical? The theory that every human has the desire to be "good", is far from new. This theory can be proved in many instances, including the fact that the author of the article in question was trying (I'm assuming) to expose a bad guy. I'm not trying to stick up for racism, in fact quite the opposite- Racism is caused by giving harsh judgements quickly, and without substantial evidence.

Besides, is the full quote too hard to understand? It isn't worded the best, but seriously...
Cut the guy some slack for not being the best public speaker, and just because it mentions Hitler doesn't mean everyone has to jump all over him for it. And, most importantly, STOP READING TABLOIDS AND GET A LIFE!

5. I actually agree with Will Smith. I think Hitler was delusional, he thought he was going to make Germany a better place.

6. It has been proven, except in the case of extreme sociopaths, that "evil" people believe that their actions are for the betterment of humanity, and that they believe themselves to be "good" people that are misunderstood by the world.

Do these delusions about there own nature, and the nature of their crimes, affect how we should treat these individuals? No. Their actions are evil, and should be punished accordingly.

Sociopaths have no self conscience, are extremely selfish and are aware of their own aberrant nature.

P.S. - I find it humorous that people are attacking Will's race and religion, and calling him a bigot. ;)
