Move Over Optimus Prime, "Voltron" Is Coming

VoltronYet another '80s cartoon is set to hit the big screen -- "Voltron." And I'll form ... the head!

New Regency is working with the Mark Gordon Co. to turn "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" into a live-action film. That formula worked out pretty well already this year -- "Transformers" anyone?

The studio also has "Alvin and the Chipmunks" scheduled for a December release -- and the writer of "Voltron," Justin Marks, penned the script for "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe."

As much as we'd love to rip these people and throw in a line like, "Doesn't anyone in Hollywood have an original idea anymore?" -- it's freakin' "Voltron," man!

31. I bet Wonder Woman would be a complete mess. They have to remember that picking the right ones in HW is a must. If they pick the wrong ones then it will be a complete mess from start to finish.

34. For all uou 80s cartoon kids from the day, remember that Flash Gordon joint? That was cutting egde for the day, we should expect a remake soon. As was mentioned, Hollywood is running outta ideas for film. TF is just the beginnning, and I still can't believe they made that Underdog crap!! Whats next, a live Care Bears action feature, or maybe She-Ra??

35. Yow. iisten up, Hollywood. Suggestions for movies of 80's cartoons, giant robots or otherwise?" "Robotech", "Gundam", and/or "Starblazers" (aka, "Spacecruiser Yamato"). The most intelligently written and produced serires ever made. And for the chick who digs 'toons, I'll bite...

36. I agree that the script reviewed on LatinoReview is NOT Voltron. It's some other big robot, constructed of junk parts, formed together from 5 big junk cats.

The villains we know and love will not be present (No Lotor, No Zarkon, No Haggar). No magic. Everything takes place on Earth. Keith, Pidge, and Sven are completely different characters (we don't know about the others). They're taking the "diversity for diversities' sake" approach, rather than thinking about if it makes sense or not. The Lions are constructed of Earth parts from other vehicles. No Castle of Lions (obviously, since this is post-apocalyptic Earth, rather than Arus).

In other words, Justin Marks is guilty of douchery in the highest degree.

37. I am very disappointed in the script for the new Voltron movie, what I've read about it so far from various sources. It seems that the idea is to pimp the characters and Voltron in order to say Voltron actually made it on the big screen. The characters are not true to the cannon of the show. Updating the story is a given. Who wants to retell what's been retold, but please, retain the original feel for the characters! The changes made are inappropriate and will be the end of Votlron, IMHO.

38. I'm going to have to agree with RadX and AlluraP. It sounds to me like they came up with a random giant robot meets the end-of-the-world script and just added the names of the team so they could call it Voltron. If the movie is made the way it was reviewed, Voltron and its fandom are in big trouble. Please, save our Voltron!!

39. Voltron fans beware. The proposed Justin Marks script that has been reviewed is neither true to the cannon of the orginal Golion or W.E.P.'s Voltron:Defender of the Universe that was first broadcast in the US in the early 80s. I'm going to agree with AlluraP in saying that I'm all for updating the plotline and giving the characters additional depth and dimension (I conceed the additions of multiethnic and various cultrual backgrounds for the characters, but I don't see changing Lance to a black man. Just MHO), but for the love of Voltron, do not destroy what made the show beloved to so many of us in the first place.

We want to see characters that resemble their original counterparts, evil villians from Doom (that means Zarkon, Lotor, Hagar and their minions), and the magic from which Voltron was created (not the junk lying in the scrap yard.) We want a Princess from an alien world in desperate need of help, and yes, we want to see, at the very least, a hint of romance between her and Keith.

We want a story that will have us falling "in love" with the adventure, magic, and excitement of Voltron all over again not some garbage that bears no resemblance to the source material other than the names slapped upon it.

As cincygirl so aptly stated, "Please, save our Voltron!!"
